Tax Codes - A Guide

What does a Tax Code look like?

Your Tax Code will usually be made of a letter and several numbers, for example: 522L

What does it mean?

If your code is a number followed by a letter then the number multiplied by 10 indicates the amount you may earn each year before paying tax.

The letter shows an adjustments that should be made, common letters include:

L The basic personal allowance
P The basic personal allowance for persons aged between 65 and 74
V The basic personal allowance for persons aged between 65 and 74, plus the married couple's allowance
Y The basic personal allowance for persons aged 75 and over
T Indicates that HM Revenue & Customers (MHRC) need to review your tax code
K Indicates that your allowances are less than your total deductions

If your tax code has two letters but no number (or it is D0), it normally indicates that you have two or more sources of income and that all allowances have been applied to the tax code and income from your main job.

BR Indicates that all income is taxed at the basic rate - usually used for a second job
D0 Indicates that all income is taxed at the higher rate - usually used for a second job
NT Used when no tax is to be taken - usually used for a pension
